Last Friday, we learned about a 15 year old dog who desperately needed to get out of the municipal animal shelter in Gonzales, Texas. His family moved to Korea a few months ago and the people in whose care he was left betrayed the family’s trust and he ended up covered in fleas at the shelter. Bandit’s story began in 1999 when he was found on the side of the road in Naples, Italy, after being tossed out of a car. On his way to America on September 11, 2001, his plane was diverted to Newfoundland when US airspace was closed in the wake of the terrorist attacks. He spent the next week under the care of volunteers for the Canadian Salvation Army, along with pets on 40 other planes that were diverted there. In addition to Italy and Canada, his life’s story has included travel to Germany and to 35 states. We just couldn’t let that shelter be the last chapter, so we hopped in our car and drove to Gonzales. Bandit was with us on our return trip. An easy, happy life in Dripping Springs for the rest of his life, no matter how short or long, will be how Bandit’s story ends.

Since Bandit’s arrival, we’ve discovered quite a few things about this quirky little fellow, including his penchant for hanging out in the kitchen with us while we cook. In the photo, below, Bandit closely observes the blistering of shishito peppers which we bought at the Dripping Springs Farmers Market last week and, speaking of which, the next market is on Wednesday, 3-7pm at The Triangle (RR12 at 290), with the following vendor line-up:

Austin Honey Co.— Spring and summer harvests, various sizes available. Also, lip balm and beeswax. Sample on site.

Drippin’ Sauce— Gourmet dipping sauce in four flavors. No high fructose corn syrup. Use to spice up burgers, meatloaf and more.

Earthwise Herbals & Sacred Moon— Seasonal produce, tinctures, teas, spritzers and more. Sample refreshing summer teas.

Fitzhugh Creek— Summer squash, spaghetti squash, baking pumpkins, leeks, beets, carrots, onions, fennel, artichokes and first tomato harvests.

Gourmet Texas Pasta— Thirty-four flavors of pasta. Gluten free flavors, too. Sample on site.

Johnsons Backyard Garden— Seasonal produce.

The Letelier Food Co.— Handmade paté in several flavors. Sample on site.

Millwood Farm— Early Girl and a variety of heirloom tomatoes, shishito peppers, a few sweet peppers, cucumbers, yellow squash, zucchini, and some herbs-mint, garlic chives, basil, sage.

Also, from Windy Hill Garden, sustainably grown: large vine-ripe tomatoes, red onions and red potaotoes. Hopefully from Engel Farms, sustainably grown: gorgeous cherry tomatoes (red and purple and orange), summer squash (yellow and light green and golden zucchini) and baby brussels sprouts. Also from Laughing Duck Farm: free-range, clean-fed duck eggs. Also, from Rolling in Thyme & Dough: whole wheat croissants, 7 grain bread, gluten free bread and scones, rustic baguettes, breakfast bread and other goodies .

Vegetable Patch— Blackberries, carrots, tomatoes, fennel and onions.

Tomorrow, Friday, June 14, is Flag Day, a nationally recognized day to honor the adoption of the United States flag on June 14 in 1777 by resolution of the Second Continental Congress. It’s also the birthday of the United States Army. Two years earlier, Congress adopted “the American continental army” on June 14, 1775. And they were doing all of that in June without A/C. The Officers and members of the Dripping Springs VFW Post 2933 and the Vince F. Taylor American Legion Post 290 encourage each place of business, all government agencies and organizations, and individuals to proudly fly the flag of the United States of America tomorrow.

The Ninth Annual Blanco Lavender Festival is this weekend, June 7 – 9. The festival’s market, with arts and crafts and local lavender products, is held on the grounds of the Blanco County Courthouse. If you’ve never been to the town square in Blanco, it is a true Texas treasure. Area lavender farms will be open with free admission to the public, speakers will give lavender-related educational programs and inspiration, and the whole town promises to be participating in the festival, even local restaurants serving lavender-flavored dishes. Get all the lavender lowdown at blancolavenderfest.com.

To get to Blanco from Dripping, just take 290 headed toward Johnson City. Just before you get to Henly, take a left on 165. When it dead ends, take a right to head into town. Maps are available on the link, above.
